Ministry orders nationwide safety audit of boarding schools

The Ministry of Education has ordered inspections at all boarding schools after a fire killed 16 students at Utumishi Girls Academy.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok announced the directive on Sunday, May 31, during an education event in Wajir County. Inspections will begin on Tuesday, June 2, and last 10 days. They will check compliance with safety standards including dormitory capacity, emergency exits, and firefighting equipment.

Bitok said officers must conduct thorough reviews and submit recommendations. Schools or staff found violating rules will face strict action. He noted prior meetings with principals where safety rules were emphasised.

The order follows the May 28 fire at the Gilgil school, where overcrowding was reported. Bitok described the incident as isolated but said the ministry would take no chances with other institutions.
