Morena starts meetings to repair alliance with PT and PVEM

Citlalli Hernández, from Morena's Elections Commission, begins meetings this Wednesday with PT and PVEM to reconcile the alliance ahead of 2027. The effort aims to overcome tensions from Claudia Sheinbaum's electoral reform. Allied senators praise her conciliatory profile.

Citlalli Hernández Mora, head of Morena's Elections Commission, launched formal meetings with the Partido del Trabajo (PT) and Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM) to mend recent rifts among the three major political forces.

Tensions peaked on March 11 when Verde and PT deputies rejected President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo's initial electoral reform. They specifically excluded advancing the revocation of mandate consultation in the so-called “Plan B”.

Electorally, PVEM plans to run alone in San Luis Potosí, where Senator Ruth González Silva, wife of Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona, may seek the governorship. González noted Verde's advantage over Morena in the state, which placed fourth in 2021 and third in 2024. In Mexico City, PVEM will also compete independently, as Jesús Sesma explained on April 15 due to no ties with Morena party.

Verde Senator and national leader Karen Castrejón said “there is already a path traced”. PT Senator Geovanna Bañuelos praised Hernández's profile: “her political and ideological training [...] is a great starting point for building the 2027 coalition”. Hernández returned to Morena's political operations after leaving the Secretariat of Women on April 16.

Mexico's Green Ecologist Party (PVEM) announced it will run without alliance with Morena for the San Luis Potosí governorship in 2027, with Senator Ruth González Silva positioned as its top candidate. The move stems from PVEM's strength in the state and Morena's weakness, labeled the third force by González herself. It comes amid nepotism restrictions blocking her Morena candidacy.

President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged PT and PVEM support for her electoral reform Plan B after the initial proposal was rejected in the Chamber of Deputies. She vowed not to relent on pushing electoral changes. The deal aims to cut budgets and privileges to fund public works.
