Munya and Linturi tensions threaten opposition meetings in Meru

Opposition leaders in Meru County have entered political tensions that threaten to disrupt planned meetings scheduled from Thursday to Monday.

PNU leader Peter Munya and DCP National Coordinating Secretary Mithika Linturi have intensified their differences amid preparations for joint opposition meetings in Meru and Isiolo counties. Munya said opposition leaders including Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa would join him in the meetings. Linturi however accused Munya of using his party leader’s photos on banners and stated that DCP would not participate. “Munya and I are political rivals. Meru is a DCP stronghold and we will not allow him to use our party to build himself politically,” Linturi said. The meetings had been postponed last month due to protests against rising fuel prices. Tensions have risen recently during funerals held in Tigania Magharibi as the two are expected to contest the Meru governorship in 2027.
