Nebraska couple arrested after mother killed during barbecue argument

A 25-year-old woman and her 30-year-old boyfriend were arrested after authorities say the woman helped kill her mother during a fight over a child at their home in Elkhorn, Nebraska.

Samantha Neiber and Mason Clarke were hosting a barbecue on Saturday when Jennifer Neiber, 57, began arguing with Clarke about her daughter's 3-year-old child.

The verbal dispute turned physical, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office release. Clarke placed a sock into Jennifer Neiber's mouth while Samantha held her mother's wrists to the ground. Jennifer Neiber was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies responded around 10 p.m. to a report of a suspicious death. Clarke was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and child abuse by neglect without injury. Samantha Neiber was charged with accessory to a Class I felony and child abuse by neglect without injury.

The child was placed with Project Harmony, a local advocacy center. Both suspects are being held at the Douglas County Correctional Center in Omaha.
