Prince Nweze Onu, Deputy National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party, has warned that the recently passed State Police Bill risks being abused by state governments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Onu issued the warning in a statement on Thursday from Abuja. He acknowledged that state police had long been proposed to address Nigeria’s security challenges but criticised the hurried passage of the bill.
The NNPP official said key issues such as accountability, operational independence, funding and oversight had not received enough national debate. He urged the Federal Government and National Assembly to pause nationwide implementation and review existing regional outfits like Amotekun and Ebubeagu first.
“Nigeria deserves security institutions that protect every citizen equally,” Onu stated. “We must never permit any reform, however well-intentioned, to become a tool for political persecution.”
