Oburu seeks reconciliation to save ODM's NDC meeting

ODM party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has initiated reconciliation efforts to counter attempts to cancel the National Delegates Conference (NDC) scheduled for March 27. The meeting, intended to endorse interim party officials including Oginga, has become a legal dispute after some members challenged its validity using party constitution provisions. The party has invited the challenger to talks to resolve the issue.

ODM party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has launched reconciliation initiatives while fighting efforts to extinguish the National Delegates Conference (NDC) planned for March 27.

The delegates' meeting, aimed at endorsing interim party officials including Dr. Oginga, has turned into a legal dispute after some members opposed its legitimacy by citing provisions in the party's constitution.

The law firm Kimani & Muriithi Associates, representing party member Vincent Chepkwony, wrote to ODM leadership on March 6 questioning the validity of the notice announcing the meeting and the participating delegates.

In response, the party through its Executive Director Oduor Ong’wen wrote to Chepkwony on March 8 inviting him to a reconciliation meeting expected this week to resolve the dispute.

Government critics within ODM, led by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Deputy Leader Godfrey Osotsi, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, have claimed that Dr. Oginga holds office without following party procedures.

A parallel meeting was held by the faction led by Edwin Sifuna.

Sharp tension has emerged within the ODM party following the decision to exclude competitive elections for national officials at the National Delegates Conference (NDC) scheduled for March 27. Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Dr Raymond Omollo, visited Kisumu yesterday, issuing stern warnings to political gangs planning to disrupt a Linda Mwananchi meeting. He promised tough action against paid thugs inciting violence in Nyanza. The ODM-affiliated group's rally, led by James Orengo, Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino, is scheduled for April 26.
