ODPP charges Malindi politician and two Italians over KSh667 million villa fire

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has charged a Malindi politician and two Italian nationals with reckless and negligent conduct in connection with a May 25 fire that destroyed Duma Villa and at least 11 other properties.

The charges were filed on July 7 before Malindi Resident Magistrate Eva Adhiambo. Prosecutors said the accused lit an open fire without taking reasonable precautions, allowing it to spread and cause extensive damage.

All three pleaded not guilty. The court released each on a KSh300,000 personal bond and ordered them to surrender their passports to ensure they remain in Kenya for trial.

The case returns to court on July 23 for directions. The fire occurred at Siro Land along the Casino beachline in Malindi Constituency, Kilifi County.
