OpenAI to end Atlas browser on August 9

OpenAI will discontinue its stand-alone Atlas browser on August 9. The company plans to integrate its browsing capabilities into the ChatGPT desktop app and an updated Chrome extension.

OpenAI announced the change alongside the release of ChatGPT Work. The move follows the company's earlier work on a "super app" for Macs and Windows that combines ChatGPT features with browsing tools.

Atlas users will gain access to a built-in browser through the redesigned desktop app. They can open it via a shortcut or the keyboard combination Ctrl, Alt and B. A new Sites feature will also let ChatGPT generate personal web apps such as dashboards and project trackers.

The Chrome extension has been updated to allow users to ask ChatGPT questions about the current page. OpenAI developer James Sun said the new tools build directly on Atlas feedback.

"All these capabilities were built on what we learned from Atlas users who took a leap of faith on a new browser," Sun said. "You taught us how agents can help make browsing and doing work on the open web better, and we are applying these learnings to these new products."
