A 22-year-old woman was seriously injured in an alleged hit-and-run in Hillsboro, Oregon, on July 13. Estefania Lopez said the driver ran her over twice before fleeing the scene.
The incident happened shortly before 7 a.m. near Town Center Drive after Lopez finished breakfast at a McDonald's. She was walking to her job at Ulta Beauty when she made eye contact with the SUV driver and began crossing the street.
Lopez described hearing the car accelerate toward her. "I remember being almost to the other side of the pavement and I just hear a car screech and accelerating," she said. "Next thing I know, I'm being hit."
She suffered a fractured pelvis and a broken bone in her lower back. Lopez spent four days in the hospital and now uses a walker and wheelchair during her expected three-month recovery. She faces nearly $20,000 in medical bills because her insurance was not accepted.
Police have not identified the SUV or the driver and are seeking surveillance video from nearby businesses.
