Delaware woman charged in bicyclist death after hit-and-run

Kara Gilmore faces second-degree vehicular homicide charges after her Subaru struck and killed a cyclist in Millville, Delaware, police said.

The incident occurred Tuesday evening on Atlantic Avenue east of Whites Neck Road. Duane Pershing, 52, was riding west in the eastbound bike lane when Gilmore, 46, drove east and entered the lane, striking him, according to Delaware State Police.

Gilmore continued driving until her Subaru Forester broke down in a nearby bank parking lot. Ocean View police found her there showing signs of impairment. She failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for driving under the influence.

Pershing was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and died the next day. Gilmore was initially released on a $3,404 unsecured bond but was later taken into custody in Maryland after charges were upgraded.

The investigation remains ongoing, authorities said Thursday.
