Paul Thomas Anderson fielded questions backstage following his socio-political family action dramedy One Battle After Another's major wins at the 2026 Oscars. When asked about the film's societal message, he quipped, “I thought we were supposed to be partying!” before adding, “Our film obviously has a certain amount of parallels to what’s happening in the news everyday, so it obviously reflects what’s happening in the world.”
The story features Leonardo DiCaprio and Teyana Taylor leading an anarchist raid on a military encampment resembling ICE to free prisoners, with Taylor's character Perfidia as a flawed anti-hero suffering from postpartum depression and unresolved personal issues that derail the revolution. Anderson addressed critiques of the film's depiction of Black women, noting, “I know a little bit about that critique... I know that Teyana (Taylor) has talked about it a lot. I know we have the portrayal of many different characters, in particular her character who is so flawed, and unfortunately makes decisions that are detrimental to the revolution she is trying to fight.” He emphasized the intentional complexity: “It’s complicated. We always knew we were trying to make something complicated... this woman was suffering not only from postpartum depression, but she was suffering from issues of her own, that she hadn’t really reconciled with.”
Themes of selfishness undermining good intentions transition to the next generation with Chase Infiniti's character. In his acceptance speech, Anderson aimed to “at least put common and decency back into fashion.” The $140 million production became Anderson's highest-grossing film at nearly $210 million worldwide, acquired by Warner Bros. over Sony.
