Prosecutors detain three suspects in killing of 12-year-old boy in San Bernardo

Carabineros detained three people for their alleged involvement in a carjacking that ended with the death of a 12-year-old boy in San Bernardo. The suspects, a 17-year-old and two adults, will face detention hearings on charges of robbery with homicide.

The incident took place around 1 a.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Caletera Jorge Alessandri Rodríguez and Catemito street. A family traveling in a Peugeot 2008 was intercepted by six individuals armed with knives, who forced the adults out but dragged the boy three kilometers after his seatbelt became entangled.

The detainees are Chileans aged 17, 18 and 21. According to regional prosecutor Marcos Pastén and head of criminal analysis Leonardo Tapia, the suspects were part of a crime spree that included stealing a vehicle at a service station and assaulting a police officer.

Security Minister Martín Arrau stated that the State failed in its duty to guarantee safety and announced a criminal complaint for robbery with homicide. Carabineros director general Marcelo Araya said investigations continue to capture the remaining suspects.
