Russian attack on Kiev leaves over 600,000 without power

A Russian drone and missile attack struck Kiev and its suburbs overnight from Friday to Saturday, killing at least three people and injuring about thirty. Over 600,000 people are without electricity, according to Ukraine's Energy Ministry. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault on civilians and energy infrastructure.

In the night of November 28 to 29, 2025, Russia launched a series of drone and missile attacks on Kiev and its surroundings, escalating the conflict in Ukraine. According to Ukraine's Energy Ministry, over 600,000 people lost power: about 500,000 in Kiev, 100,000 in the surrounding region, and nearly 8,000 in Kharkiv. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on X that the Russians deployed «about 36 missiles and nearly 600 drones against civilian populations», primarily targeting energy infrastructure and residential buildings, causing significant damage and fires.

A new toll reports at least three dead and about thirty injured, according to Ukrainian officials. Kiev's military administration reported one man killed and eight injured in the capital, including a 13-year-old teenager, while in the region, Mykola Kalachnyk, head of the Kiev administration, lamented one dead and 11 injured, with six hospitalized, in Vychhorod following a drone attack. Several residential buildings, including a 25-story and a 14-story one, as well as individual houses and cars, were damaged. Kiev's military administration described the assault as a «cynical terrorist» act aimed at «purely and simply terrorizing the civilian population», according to Tymur Tkachenko.

Zelensky offered condolences to the victims' families and called for bolstering air defenses: «We must work tirelessly to ensure a sufficient number of missiles for our air defense systems». He also demanded that Europe freeze Russian assets if Moscow continues its strikes. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia for pursuing its «war plan» to «kill and destroy» amid peace plan discussions.

This attack comes as a Ukrainian delegation heads to the United States to discuss the American peace plan, and Zelensky is set to meet Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday to address conditions for a «just and lasting peace».
