Leaked documents reveal an alleged Russian network that financed at least 250 critical articles in Argentine media from June to October 2024. Russia's embassy rejected the accusations as unfounded and an attempt to muddy bilateral relations. President Javier Milei and Senator Patricia Bullrich vowed to pursue those responsible to the end.
An OpenDemocracy investigation with an international consortium, based on 76 leaked documents obtained by The Continent, exposes a structure called “La Compañía”, linked to Russian intelligence, that allegedly allocated about $283,000 to publish over 250 articles in more than 20 Argentine media outlets. The content criticized Argentina's economy, fiscal adjustment, and foreign policy, including its stance on Ukraine, using fake or non-existent bylines like Manuel Godsin.
Outlets such as C5N, A24, El Destape, Big Bang News, and Diario Registrado appear in the documents. Executives from several denied Russian funding, attributing it to intermediaries, though two sources admitted smaller payments. Conicet researcher Martín Becerra noted that media precarity enables such campaigns.
Senator Patricia Bullrich of La Libertad Avanza amplified the report, saying it confirmed her warning from six months ago. President Javier Milei posted on social media that those involved are the “tip of the iceberg” and vowed to identify all actors.
Russia's embassy issued a statement rejecting the accusations as baseless and driven by ideological stances aimed at damaging ties with Argentina.
