Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced that 2,500 officers will undergo training for the new Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit. The announcement came on Sunday after a church service.
Sakaja said the officers will be drawn from the Nairobi County Inspectorate and the National Police Service. He noted that the city's daytime population rises above seven million people, requiring more security patrols.
The initiative stems from a KSh80 billion cooperation agreement signed in February between the national and county governments. Kamukunji Police Station has been designated as the unit's future headquarters after rehabilitation.
Sakaja also mentioned plans for a citywide CCTV network and a new Traffic Management Center at City Cabanas. He traveled to New York and London last month with the Interior Cabinet Secretary to study foreign policing models.
