Several airlines resume flights to Venezuela

Following the reopening of Venezuelan airspace ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump at the end of January, several Colombian airlines have announced the resumption of operations to Caracas. Avianca, Latam, and Wingo are leading this reactivation, with direct routes from Bogotá and Medellín starting in February 2026. These steps aim to strengthen regional connectivity and trade.

At the end of January 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the reopening of airspace over Venezuela after a call with interim President Delcy Rodríguez, as part of efforts to resume ties following a raid to capture Nicolás Maduro. This decision has enabled several airlines to resume flights to Caracas.

Avianca, Colombia's largest airline, will reactivate its direct Bogotá-Caracas route starting February 12, 2026, with daily flights. 'Venezuela has historically been a relevant market for Avianca. The airline maintains a commitment to connectivity with that country for more than six decades, always prioritizing operational safety and compliance with the applicable regulatory framework,' the company explained.

Latam Airlines Colombia will begin operations to Caracas from February 23, with four weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The airline plans to increase to seven frequencies starting April 1, subject to approvals from aviation authorities in both countries. Erika Zarante, CEO of Latam Airlines Colombia, stated: 'Venezuela is a very important market, which Latam has always viewed with interest regarding passenger flow. Before our permit was suspended, four frequencies were operated per week. Our intention today is to strengthen these operations.' She added: 'Colombia plays a fundamental role in the reactivation and economic development of the country, and as a leading airline group in the region, we have the responsibility and capacity to contribute through robust and sustainable air connectivity.'

Wingo resumed its Medellín-Caracas flights with three weekly frequencies on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, after suspending them on December 4, 2025, for safety evaluations. This route facilitates family, tourist, and business travel.

Other airlines, such as Copa Airlines, which resumed from January 13 with increasing frequencies to daily in February, and international carriers like Turkish Airlines, Gol, Laser Airlines, Avior Airlines, TAP, and Plus Ultra, have also announced similar plans. Satena is evaluating its options in a meeting at the end of February.
