The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted preliminary conditional approval on July 2 for a Sony Bank-owned trust to issue a dollar-backed stablecoin. The decision does not reference PlayStation or game purchases, despite online speculation linking the two.
The proposed Connectia Trust would operate a restricted, permissioned network limited to U.S. retail customers with existing Sony Group ties and Sony companies themselves. It would handle stablecoin issuance, reserves, custody, and transfers within that closed system.
Sony Bank stated it is preparing for a possible 2027 opening, though final approval and actual operations remain subject to further requirements and are not guaranteed. The filing uses general terms and does not commit any specific consumer service, including games, to the network.
In October 2025, Sony completed a partial spin-off of its financial services business while retaining a 16.40 percent stake in Sony Financial Group. Social media posts have connected the trust approval to potential PlayStation Store payments, but no such product has been announced.
