Square Enix announces first HD-2D Final Fantasy game

Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy Resonance during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct. The turn-based RPG marks the series' first entry in the HD-2D style and adapts the story from the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.

The game arrives October 22 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. It carries a $50 price tag and removes all gacha mechanics from the original mobile release. Square Enix described the title as a console-quality experience rebuilt from the ground up rather than a simple port. It features a new turn-based combat system, an overworld map, chocobos, airships, and 33 original music tracks. Players can summon legacy Final Fantasy characters including Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII and Terra Branford from Final Fantasy VI. The visuals combine HD-2D pixel art with select 3D summon sequences. The project draws from the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which launched in Japan in 2015 before the service closed. Developers say the new version expands the narrative with additional elements while preserving classic Final Fantasy references.
