Stan Wawrinka played his final tour-level match on clay at the Millennium Estoril Open, falling in the first round to Roman Andres Burruchaga. The 41-year-old Swiss received an emotional sendoff from the crowd after a three-set defeat.
Wawrinka lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on July 22. He dropped the opening set before forcing a decider, where he saved three match points.
The three-time Grand Slam champion described the support as the highlight. "The love from the people is the most important thing," he said, noting the many children in attendance.
Wawrinka finished his clay career with a 202-124 record. His titles on the surface include the 2014 Monte-Carlo Masters and the 2015 French Open.
He has one remaining event on his farewell tour, the Swiss Indoors in Basel scheduled for October.
