Strand Releasing announced the acquisition of North American rights to “Diamond Diplomacy,” directed by Yuriko Gamo Romer. The documentary traces baseball's history from its introduction to Japan in 1872 to its modern global influence, including the rise of Shohei Ohtani. It weaves archival footage, personal stories, and cultural history to show the sport as a bridge between the two nations amid diplomacy, conflict, and exchange. The film premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival in 2025 and screened at events like the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival, and Hawaii International Film Festival. It earned runner-up honors for the Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film, which recognizes documentaries on American history. The deal was negotiated between Strand Releasing and Romer, along with producer Marc Smolowitz of 13th Gen for Flying Carp Productions. Strand executive Jon Gerrans stated, “Strand is thrilled to be working with Yuriko and her team. ‘Diamond Diplomacy’ offers a compelling and timely story — both an illuminating historical lens and an emotionally engaging sports narrative that we believe will resonate deeply with audiences across North America.” Romer responded, “Following an extraordinary festival run, we’re delighted to partner with Strand Releasing, one of the most respected independent distributors in the world. Their legacy of championing bold and meaningful cinema gives us great confidence as we bring ‘Diamond Diplomacy’ to audiences.” Strand plans a national rollout after the festival run, with a theatrical release set for the fall.
