Sweden to face France in round of 16 after 1-1 draw with Japan

Sweden secured advancement to the World Cup round of 16 after a 1-1 draw with Japan. The team will now face France on Tuesday.

Jacob Widell Zetterström made his World Cup debut in goal and helped keep a clean sheet in several key moments. The goalkeeper had taken a sabbatical in 2020 after two concussions but returned strongly.

Isak Hien was injured in the match against Japan and is now leaving the tournament. National team doctor Jonas Werner confirmed that the injury to the back of his left thigh means Hien cannot participate further.

The match against France will be played in New Jersey on Tuesday at 23.00 Swedish time. Coach Graham Potter called it an enormous challenge.

JPN 1-1 SWE: Weird one in that a draw was enough for both. Japan still a lovely side to watch, but not at the races in terms of creativity today. Sweden were much better than last time out - balance of the side felt smarter, and found ways to create danger. Both into the Ro32.
