Tarcísio de Freitas visits Jaguaré and announces aid for families hit by explosion

São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas visited the Jaguaré explosion site on Wednesday, two days after the accident that killed one person and injured three. He announced that 232 families will receive emergency aid and can choose housing options funded by concessionaires Sabesp and Comgás.

The explosion took place on Monday, May 11, during joint work by Sabesp and Comgás on Rua Dr. Benedito de Moraes Leme. A security camera captured the moment a gas leak caused several homes to be destroyed and pedestrians to be thrown.

Tarcísio de Freitas said the state government will hold the concessionaires accountable. “The heavy hand of the State will be present,” he declared during the visit. He reported that more than 30 similar works were halted for protocol review.

Affected families will each receive R$ 5,000 in emergency aid. They can choose CDHU apartments, credit letters between R$ 250,000 and R$ 300,000, or reconstruction on site, with costs covered by Sabesp and Comgás. Five homes will be demolished due to structural damage.

Arsesp set a deadline of Friday, May 15, for the companies to submit expert reports. Residents plan a collective lawsuit and held a scheduled meeting with the São Paulo Public Ministry.
