Temporary SPEI suspension for maintenance this Friday

The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) will suspend the Interbank Electronic Payment System (SPEI) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025, for scheduled maintenance. This pause will impact interbank transfers across most Mexican banks, so users are advised to complete operations in advance to avoid delays or rejections.

The SPEI, developed by Banxico, is a key tool for instant electronic transfers between banks in Mexico, processing millions of daily transactions. On Friday, October 24, 2025, the system will pause for two hours, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., due to scheduled maintenance aimed at strengthening the platform's security and stability.

Institutions such as BBVA, Banorte, Santander, Banamex, Scotiabank, Caja Popular Mexicana, NU, Ualá, and Bankaool have notified customers of potential disruptions. BBVA stated in a notice: “Due to maintenance of the SPEI platform today between 6 and 8 p.m., interbank transfers made during this time may experience some delay.” Banxico emphasized that such measures are periodic to ensure the national financial system's proper operation.

To avoid issues, Banxico and banks urge completing transfers before 6:00 p.m. or after 8:00 p.m. For NU, if a credit card payment is due that day and attempted during the pause, it may be rejected and incur interest upon return to the origin account. Alternatives like PayPal or Electronic Funds Transfer (TEF) are available, though Banxico warns they may not match SPEI's speed and fund availability.

Once maintenance ends, pending operations will process automatically. Users can check status via Banxico's SPEI Monitor or bank apps, and are advised to use official channels to prevent fraud. SPEI delays can stem from connection issues, bank portal failures, or errors in provided information.
