Trai Essex makes case for expanded role for Ben Skowronek

Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Trai Essex has called for more offensive opportunities for wide receiver Ben Skowronek. Essex highlighted Skowronek's special teams prowess and blocking skills during a recent podcast appearance.

Essex, speaking on his Snap Count podcast, described Skowronek as a Pro Bowl and All-Pro special teams player who can affect plays when lined up at wide receiver. He noted Skowronek's ability as a blocker and argued the receiver deserves consideration in certain offensive packages.

Skowronek has spent the past two seasons with the Steelers. He recorded nine receptions for 138 yards and one touchdown during that time. The team recently traded for Michael Pittman Jr. and drafted Germie Bernard to bolster the position behind DK Metcalf.

Skowronek earned his first Pro Bowl selection last year for his special teams contributions. Essex acknowledged that Skowronek will likely secure a roster spot due to those skills but said he probably will not see increased offensive snaps amid a crowded receiver room that also includes Roman Wilson.
