Two men killed in shooting in central Santiago

Two men died on Monday night after a shooting in central Santiago, near the Meiggs neighborhood. The attackers fired from another vehicle, chasing one victim who tried to flee. Authorities are investigating with no arrests so far.

The incident took place around 10 p.m. on a side street of the Blanco Encalada avenue tunnel, at the height of Exposición, near the southern sector of the Meiggs neighborhood. The victims were the driver and co-pilot of a vehicle stopped there. According to the preliminary reconstruction, unknowns in another car opened fire, leaving the co-pilot dead at the initial site.

The driver tried to escape on foot but was pursued by the attackers, who caught up and killed him near Claudio Gay and Conferencia streets. Carabineros cordoned off both scenes, while the Organized Crime and Homicides Team (ECOH) of the Prosecutor's Office, along with the OS-9 Department and the Criminalistics Laboratory, began the inquiries.

Prosecutor Paola Salcedo described the sequence based on camera footage: “Two vehicles arrive at this place. The first victim descends, enters the second vehicle, and then is hit by a subject who inflicts ballistic impacts on his body”. She added: “The driver flees the place and is caught on another nearby artery, where he is also killed by ballistic impacts (...) everything indicates that the driver flees alive, without injuries, and is reached by the subjects on the adjacent streets”.

Between 10 and 15 ballistic evidences were collected at the sites. Salcedo did not advance possible motives, and as of now, there are no arrests or victim identities disclosed. The investigation continues to clarify the details of the event.
