A frontal system brought uneven rainfall to the Santiago region on Wednesday, with accumulations ranging from under 1 mm to over 23 mm, plus power cuts that hit nearly 47,000 customers.
Rain began near midday on Wednesday in the capital and grew heavier in the afternoon. Stations such as Tobalaba recorded 18 mm, while Quinta Normal logged just 0.9 mm. Melipilla saw 23.1 mm and Valparaíso accumulated 22.2 mm.
Authorities activated preventive plans. Governor Claudio Orrego warned of landslide risks due to the zero isotherm at 2,500 meters. The Superintendency of Electricity and Fuels reported a peak of 47,078 customers without power, a figure that fell to about 34,000 by afternoon. Firms including Enel and CGE reinforced crews.
In the south, San Juan de la Costa saw the worst impacts: six homes damaged, river overflows and eight students sheltered at a school. Metro trains ran at reduced speed on five lines and the Los Libertadores pass was closed.
