Unlike sequels or prequels, these works place Tris Prior, the series' central character, in an alternative universe with a divergent history from the original storyline. Roth's protagonist shares a romance with Tobias in the main series. This marks Roth's return to the Divergent world more than a decade after its final book. Previously, she published Four, a collection detailing Tobias's earlier life, just one year after the series concluded. Roth has released several other series and standalone novels since then. None have matched Divergent's blockbuster success, amid the filmed adaptations' decline.
