West Virginia man pleads guilty to threatening Trump

A 20-year-old West Virginia man has admitted in court to making online threats against President Donald Trump, including a vow to snipe him with a rifle.

Cody Smith pleaded guilty to charges of threatening the president and retaliating against federal officials by threat. Court filings show he sent messages to Donald Trump Jr. detailing plans to kill Trump and harm ICE agents.

Smith was arrested in January after posting threats online and calling authorities. He was ordered detained at a March 24 hearing. Prosecutors noted he had previously brandished a rifle during a dispute.

The defendant faces up to five years in prison for the presidential threat charge and up to 10 years for threats against ICE. No sentencing date has been set, and there was no plea agreement in the case.
