Wildfires affecting Ávila and Madrid have led to the evacuation of dozens of municipalities and the relocation of the command post from Cenicientos to Navalcarnero. The government has established a unified command amid the potential merger of the fires.
Smoke forced the evacuation of Sotillo de la Adrada and, hours later, Cenicientos. Thirteen kilometers separate the two municipalities. The mayor of Sotillo de la Adrada, Juan Pablo Martín, said roads to Madrid were closed and buses were provided to Arenas de San Pedro.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso met at the coordination committee meeting in Cenicientos. Sánchez called for a state pact against the climate emergency and Ayuso said the administrations are working together.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska acknowledged that Saturday had not been a positive day due to weather conditions. The national emergency was extended to Toledo and international aid was requested through the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
