Xbox next console may skip disc drive like PlayStation

Microsoft is reportedly planning to release its next-generation Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix, without a built-in disc drive. The company is also developing a disc-to-digital feature to convert existing physical games into digital licenses. This follows similar moves by Sony for its upcoming PlayStation hardware.

A report from Windows Central indicates that Project Helix will not include a disc drive. The Verge adds that Microsoft is testing a system to grant digital licenses for Xbox Series X and Xbox One game discs. Once converted, the disc would no longer be required to play the game.

The feature would tie the digital entitlement to the specific disc, allowing it to be shared between accounts while preventing simultaneous use on multiple systems. It would not apply to Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs.

Microsoft has not yet confirmed whether Project Helix will launch without a disc drive. Alpha development kits for the console are scheduled to roll out in 2027.
