Yamagata prefecture observes first snow of season on same date as last year

Yamagata Prefecture recorded its first snowfall of the season on November 19, the same date as last year. Influenced by a winter-type pressure pattern bringing strong cold air, snow mixed with rain fell in Yamagata City. Accumulations reached up to 26 centimeters in some areas.

The Yamagata Meteorological Office announced that the first snowfall of the season in Yamagata Prefecture was observed around 12:55 p.m. on November 19 in the Midoricho district of Yamagata City. This was due to the influence of a strengthened winter-type pressure pattern that brought in strong cold air.

Last season's first snow was also observed on November 18, which was two days later than the average year. This year's arrival aligns closely with the previous season.

As of 6 p.m. on the same day, snowfall had been recorded at 11 out of the prefecture's 14 observation points. Snow accumulation reached 26 centimeters in the town of Nishikawa and 22 centimeters in the village of Okura.

Yamagata Prefecture, located on Japan's Sea of Japan side, is known for heavy winter snowfall. This early seasonal event highlights the onset of winter conditions, potentially affecting transportation and daily life, with authorities urging caution.
