49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan injured in car crash

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a car accident on July 14. The team confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday as players reported to training camp.

Shanahan, 46, broke his nose, three ribs and a hand, suffered a concussion and required more than 40 stitches to his face after colliding with an SUV near his Northern California home. Paramedics took him to a local hospital, where he was released the same day. The other driver was uninjured, and authorities said drugs and alcohol were not involved.

Shanahan will take part in team activities on a limited basis while recovering. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster and team coordinators will handle most head-coaching duties. General manager John Lynch said he does not expect Shanahan to miss the regular-season opener.

The coach informed staff of the crash on Tuesday and is recovering at home. He has not yet been cleared for full duties pending resolution of concussion symptoms. Shanahan is entering his 10th season with the 49ers.
