Alonso denies upgrade will decide his Aston Martin future

Fernando Alonso has stated that his Formula 1 future with Aston Martin does not depend on the team's upcoming upgrade package for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Alonso confirmed ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix that he will decide on his 2027 plans during the summer break after the Hungarian race. He rejected any direct link between the upgrade's performance and his contract decision.

Aston Martin team boss Adrian Newey had expressed hope earlier this week that a successful Budapest upgrade would persuade the 44-year-old to stay beyond 2026. Alonso's current deal expires at the end of the season.

The Silverstone-based team sits with just one point after eight rounds of the 2026 season. It has focused development resources on the larger AMR26 upgrade rather than smaller immediate changes.

Alonso noted the upgrade's value for the team's 2027 direction regardless of his involvement. He highlighted ongoing shortfalls in downforce, power and experience as areas the package must address.
