ANAC investigates helicopter contracts after Rio collision

ANAC will review contracts between helicopter operators and Rio de Janeiro City Hall following the air collision that killed six people on Sunday.

Two helicopters collided in the air on Sunday (14/6) and fell near Avenida das Américas in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in western Rio de Janeiro. The accident left six people dead.

ANAC said it will examine every service contract signed with City Hall, including that of helicopter PR-DJJ. The aircraft, registered for private transport, had a swap agreement for flight hours in exchange for use of the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas helipad.

Minister Tomé Franca said the agency is checking whether one of the aircraft operated irregularly as a clandestine air taxi. He mentioned prefix PP-MAC, which had received prior complaints.

The City Hall stated that the swap model has been in place since 1999 and that the agreements undergo legal review. ANAC said the investigation into the causes of the accident is the responsibility of CENIPA.
