This feature aims to simplify connections for non-Apple accessories, though it comes with limitations. The changes are limited to Europe and depend on manufacturer support.
Apple is enhancing iOS compatibility with third-party devices through its iOS 26.3 update, set for release in the European Union to meet requirements under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). According to beta notes reported by MacRumors, the update introduces proximity pairing, allowing users to connect accessories like Sony headphones by simply bringing them close to an iPhone or iPad for a one-tap process via NFC. This eliminates the need for navigating Bluetooth settings, though it does not support seamless switching between devices as with AirPods.
Additionally, the update enables iPhone notifications to be forwarded to third-party smartwatches, such as those running Wear OS. Users can view and react to alerts, a feature previously exclusive to the Apple Watch. However, notifications are limited to one connected device at a time; enabling them on a third-party watch disables them on an Apple Watch.
These changes, effective in Europe only, are part of Apple's DMA compliance efforts. An EU spokesperson stated to The Wall Street Journal: "The DMA creates new opportunities for developers to bring to market innovative products and services in Europe. This is another step towards a more inter-connected digital ecosystem to the benefit of all EU citizens." The EU Commission noted that the functionality will be fully available across the bloc in 2026.
While proximity pairing offers a minor convenience, the notification support could make third-party watches more viable with iOS. Apple has approached DMA rules cautiously, implementing the minimum required changes, sometimes at the expense of features available elsewhere for privacy reasons.
