NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks has named Mike McCarthy a sleeper candidate for the 2026 NFL Coach of the Year award in his first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Brooks highlighted the challenges and opportunities facing McCarthy after he replaced longtime coach Mike Tomlin. He noted that McCarthy must elevate quarterback Aaron Rodgers while working with defensive coordinator Patrick Graham to restore the defense's strength.
Tomlin never received the award during his 19-year tenure despite consistent success. McCarthy, who previously coached the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys, also lacks the honor despite his own accomplishments.
The Steelers are expected to contend, but Brooks stressed that only a standout season would position McCarthy for the award. Current betting odds list him at +1600 on DraftKings, behind candidates such as John Harbaugh and Jesse Minter.
McCarthy assumes play-calling duties on offense as Rodgers enters what may be his final NFL season.
