Cameron Norrie defeated Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4 in the first round of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, ending the 41-year-old Swiss player's final appearance at the event on a controversial net-cord match point. Norrie immediately apologized to Wawrinka after the lucky winner. Tournament director Tommy Robredo presented Wawrinka with a trophy honoring his legacy.
The match, which lasted two hours and 33 minutes, saw Norrie edge Wawrinka by just four points overall. The British No. 7 seed, a left-hander, saved five of seven break points faced and converted four of 11 he created. Wawrinka, entering as a wild card, fought back fiercely, forcing a third set after winning the second-set tiebreak 7-5.
