Chicago Fire actors unpack Violet and Novak's hostage crisis

Stars Hanako Greensmith and Jocelyn Hudon discussed the latest Chicago Fire episode, where their characters Violet and Novak face a harrowing hostage situation. The ordeal, resolved by Vasquez's rescue, adds tension to the ongoing love triangle involving the firefighter. The actors shared insights on how the trauma affects their characters' friendship.

In Wednesday's episode of Chicago Fire's Season 14, Violet and Novak respond to an emergency call and end up trapped in a subterranean bunker. A deranged superintendent holds them at gunpoint while they attempt to treat his pregnant tenant, shackled to a bed and suffering from hyperglycemia due to lack of insulin as she goes into labor. Vasquez notices their unattended rig on the street, tracks them down, and rescues everyone, including the woman and her newborn, before any lives are lost. Jocelyn Hudon, who plays Novak, described her character's confrontation with Violet over hooking up with Vasquez—Novak's work crush—as a 'big step' in communicating feelings. 'She doesn't really need a response, or a solution, or a conclusion,' Hudon told TVLine. 'It shows, at the core of it, you can be disappointed, but you can still love someone,' added Hanako Greensmith, who portrays Violet. The rescue by Vasquez introduces 'another layer of intensity' to the trio's dynamics, Greensmith said. Both characters emerge grateful for his heroism, with Greensmith noting Violet prioritizes her bond with Novak after nearly dying together. 'What really matters to her is that [she and Novak] almost died in a bunker together, and they shared this moment,' Greensmith explained. Hudon called the episode a 'rock bottom' professionally for the firefighters, while Greensmith teased more drama ahead in the season.
