Chile's delegation abstained in a Cuba-driven UN General Assembly vote on debating the US embargo. The move marks a shift from the prior stance of Gabriel Boric's government.
The vote took place on Tuesday this week during the General Assembly session. It gained support from 136 countries, while nine voted against and 30 abstained, including Chile.
Ambassador Roberto Ampuero justified the abstention by noting that the issue is handled in a binary way that does not reflect the situation's complexity. He added that Chile reaffirms that the Cuban people must freely decide their political, economic and social destiny.
This stance brings Chile closer to the positions of the United States and Argentina under the José Antonio Kast administration. During Boric's government, Chile had consistently backed initiatives against the embargo.
