China investigates senior defence official Bian Zhigang for corruption

Senior Chinese defence industry official Bian Zhigang has been placed under investigation for corruption, the latest high-profile target in Beijing’s sweeping crackdown on its military sector.

Bian Zhigang has served as deputy head of the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense since February 2024. The agency coordinates research, development and production of military equipment across the nuclear, aerospace, aviation, shipbuilding, armaments and electronics sectors.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced the probe. Bian’s profile was removed from official websites after the announcement.

Bian spent most of his career at the agency, which drives core capabilities of China’s defence industrial base.
