Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer faced boos and hecklers while marching in the New York City Pride Parade on Sunday. The New York Democrat waved a rainbow flag and addressed the crowd through a bullhorn amid audible jeers.
Schumer, who said he was the first senator to march in the event in 1999, told participants he had not missed a parade since then. “Happy Pride, everybody,” he said, but the remarks drew hissing and jeering from parts of the audience.
The incident occurred as divisions within the Democratic Party drew attention in New York. Socialist candidates backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani won three Democratic primaries for U.S. House seats earlier in the week.
New York Attorney General Letitia James expressed frustration with the party’s direction on Wednesday. She criticized some Mamdani-endorsed candidates for lacking understanding of local politics.
President Trump commented on Schumer’s standing earlier in the week, referring to the senator as “100% Palestinian” in remarks from the Oval Office.
