Delhi’s first women’s police station at Sabzi Mandi has completed one month since its inauguration on June 19. Officials report nine FIRs registered and hundreds of complaints received amid some coordination challenges.
The station, led by Station House Officer Laxmi Singh, aims to provide focused handling of crimes against women. In its first month it registered two FIRs each under the POCSO Act and for rape and molestation, plus three dowry-related cases. It has also taken over cases previously handled by the local Crimes Against Women cell.
A total of 154 fresh complaints arrived at the station, with 23 disposed of so far. It absorbed another 298 complaints from the CAW cell, of which 47 have been resolved. Twenty-five complaints were addressed during a Jan Sunwai meeting held last week.
Complainants have mixed experiences. One woman said she chose the station because she “felt I would be heard.” Another reported waiting over an hour for an officer who did not arrive. The SHO acknowledged the need for more trained counsellors and staff, noting the sanctioned strength of 57 personnel but current numbers of 35 to 40.
