EPA waives ethanol fuel restrictions amid soaring gas prices

The Environmental Protection Agency announced on Wednesday it will temporarily lift federal limits on E15 and E10 gasoline blends to help lower prices strained by the Iran conflict. The waiver aims to boost fuel supply starting May 1. Gas prices have reached nearly $4 per gallon, the highest since 2022.

The EPA, under President Donald Trump, stated it is waiving restrictions barring E15—gasoline blended with 15% ethanol—from sale during summer months, a measure typically in place to reduce air pollution. The agency is also removing 'all federal impediments' to E10 sales nationwide. These changes will take effect May 1 and last until May 20, with possible extension, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said. 'EPA is working with our federal partners to reduce unnecessary costs and uncertainty and ensure that gas prices remain affordable for all Americans through the summer. This emergency action will provide American families with relief by increasing fuel supply and consumer choice,' Zeldin said. He added that President Trump has prioritized affordable domestic energy, noting progress in the administration's first year. National average gas prices hit nearly $4 per gallon this week, per AAA, up due to the ongoing war in Iran where attacks have shut the Strait of Hormuz, through which 25% of world oil passes. Diesel averages $5.37 per gallon, a 40% jump. Brent crude spiked to nearly $120 per barrel recently from $60-$70 in 2025, now at $98. Though the US imports little Middle East oil, global markets are disrupted. Trump acknowledged pump pain but prioritized the operation early on, saying it is 'far more important than having gasoline prices go up a little bit' and prices would drop 'very rapidly' post-operation. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on March 10 the price rise is temporary, with long-term drops expected. Allies including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Japan offered help securing the strait.

X discussions praise the EPA's temporary waiver on E15 and E10 ethanol blends under Administrator Lee Zeldin as a swift response to gas prices nearing $4/gallon due to the Iran war, boosting domestic supply and offering pump relief. Supporters highlight American energy independence, while skeptics doubt significant price drops and warn of engine damage to older vehicles and small equipment. News outlets and analysts note benefits for corn growers but limited infrastructure for widespread impact.

The escalation of the Iran war is driving up oil prices and causing noticeable increases at German gas stations. Diesel now costs an average of 2.04 euros per liter, gasoline 1.94 euros. Politicians are calling for government interventions against rising fuel costs.

As the US-Iran conflict disrupts global oil via the Strait of Hormuz closure—driving prices above $100 per barrel—Trump administration rollbacks on vehicle fuel efficiency standards are amplifying domestic gasoline price surges, undoing decades of efficiency gains that previously blunted such shocks.

Oil prices have surged past $90 a barrel a week after the US and Israel launched major attacks on Iran, escalating into a Middle East war. The conflict has stranded oil shipments in the Persian Gulf and damaged key facilities, disrupting supplies. Consumers globally face higher gasoline and diesel costs as a result.

Brent crude briefly rose above $100 a barrel early Thursday after two oil tankers were reported struck by projectiles near Iraq, adding to supply fears tied to the Iran war and disruption in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. officials said President Donald Trump authorized a 172 million-barrel release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve beginning next week.

Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz announced increases of $370 per liter in 93-octane gasoline and $580 in diesel, effective from Thursday, March 26, due to the international oil price surge from the Iran conflict. The government also activated palliative measures, including freezing Transantiago fares until year-end and subsidies for taxi drivers. Quiroz justified the moves as necessary to align local prices with international levels and safeguard public finances.

Oil prices rocketed above $100 per barrel on Monday, driven by fears of prolonged supply disruptions from the escalating Iran war in the Middle East. The conflict, including strikes in Beirut and threats against Iran's leadership, has heightened risks to the Strait of Hormuz. This surge marks the biggest jump since 2020, fueling concerns over global fuel prices and inflation.

The ongoing conflict with Iran has halted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, driving up global oil and gas prices. This surge is providing short-term gains for producers outside the Persian Gulf region, such as Exxon Mobil and Chevron. Consumers in the US and Europe are facing higher bills as a result.
