FDP elects Kubicki as chair after narrow challenge

Wolfgang Kubicki has taken over as FDP chair after Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann challenged him narrowly. The two are now exchanging conciliatory tones.

At the FDP party congress in Berlin, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann made a last-minute challenge against Wolfgang Kubicki and lost the leadership vote narrowly. Kubicki called out to her afterward: „Jetzt weißt du, wo der Hammer hängt.“

Strack-Zimmermann said in an interview that she did not hold the remark against him. „Kubicki was understandably furious and had to let it out somewhere,“ she explained.

Shortly after the election, new presidium member Nadin Zaya launched a frontal attack on Kubicki. The issue was the handling of the AfD and internal opponents.

Strack-Zimmermann warned her party against a shift to the right. „Liberalism does not define itself by occupying some space to the right of the center,“ she said.
