A Senate leadership change occurred on June 3 when a quorum of 12 senators enabled the election of Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian as acting Senate president.
The change occurred after Sen. Francis Escudero appeared in the session, ending a three-day impasse. The minority declared all leadership posts vacant and elected Gatchalian as Senate president pro tempore. Escudero said he was not taking sides but standing for the Senate as an institution. Malacañang and the House of Representatives welcomed the new leadership. Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano maintained he remained the legitimate Senate president and challenged the validity of the proceedings. President Marcos called on senators to get back to work.
