Zulkifli Hasan made the statement while attending the declaration of the Gerakan Pilah Sampah movement in the Rasuna Said area of South Jakarta on 10 May 2026. He said that if the target is not met, the public may protest him in May 2028.

The government will accelerate construction of Waste-to-Energy projects in 71 cities and regencies that have signed agreements. Progress so far stands at 22.5 percent, with a 50 percent target set for 2027.

Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat confirmed that the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site will accept only residual waste starting 1 August 2026. The move is backed by Presidential Regulation Number 109 of 2025, which aims to cut permitting delays for waste management projects.
