Hamburg waste management removes three tons less New Year's trash

In Hamburg, waste management collected around three tons less trash during New Year's Eve night and morning than the previous year. About 80 employees gathered 16 tons of waste at busy spots, including glass shards, bottles, and packaging. A spokesperson attributes this to wet cold weather and increased environmental awareness.

Hamburg's waste management reported a positive trend after New Year's Eve: Compared to the previous year, around three tons less trash was removed. In total, about 80 employees collected roughly 16 tons of waste at busy locations in the Hanseatic city. The refuse mainly consisted of glass shards, bottles, packaging, and remnants of fireworks.

A spokesperson from the waste management explained the reduction by the wet cold weather, which dampened the celebrations, as well as by the population's increased awareness of proper disposal. "The trend is a positive one," he emphasized.

The operations focused on central spots such as the Landungsbrücken, the fish market, and the Reeperbahn. In other districts, New Year's waste is cleared during regular cleaning duties or by residents themselves. These measures highlight Hamburg's efforts toward cleanliness and sustainability in the city.
