Health ministry opens 2025 sandbox for digital innovations

Indonesia's Ministry of Health has officially opened registration for the 2025 Health Sandbox to accelerate digital innovations in healthcare. The program aims to speed up the adoption of safe and beneficial technologies for the public. Registration runs from November 5 to 30, 2025, online.

In Jakarta on Monday, Setiaji, the Minister of Health's Special Staff for Health Technology, explained that the Health Sandbox is an acceleration program for innovations in the health sector. It provides testing schemes, mentoring, and recommendations for health solutions from prototypes to implementation. "Through this program, every innovation, from prototype to implementation, is tested and guided to ensure access, quality, and safety of services for the public," Setiaji stated.

The program stems from the Ministry of Health's commitment to balance innovation drives with public protection. Previous batches yielded recommendations such as limiting patients per doctor to improve services and adding accessibility menus for disabled users to make apps more inclusive. It also produced health policy recommendations. “We want to ensure that every innovation not only grows quickly but is also safe, effective, and compliant with regulations,” Setiaji added.

The Health Sandbox evolved from the Regulatory Sandbox since 2021, starting with the e-Malaria initiative, followed by the telehealth cluster in 2023, and cross-cluster in 2024. Eko Sulistijo, Head of the Ministry's Center for Data and Information Technology, noted the program is open to individuals, groups, government, and private institutions with health technology innovations. “Through the Health Sandbox, innovators not only get opportunities to develop their products or services but also receive official recognition that boosts public and investor trust,” Eko said.

Approved innovations will receive the Health Technology Innovation Registration Mark (ITK) and recommended status from the Ministry, signifying thorough evaluation including data security, service quality, and regulatory compliance. Eko invited health innovators to participate via sandbox.kemkes.go.id to strengthen the national health technology ecosystem.
