Former AIK and Djurgården player Nicklas Heinerö has spoken about the challenges he faced during the 2024/25 season with Danish club Herlev Eagles. His girlfriend Gabriella was diagnosed with aggressive lymph node cancer while the family remained in Stockholm. The situation led to conflicts with the club over his presence in Denmark.
Heinerö contacted Herlev Eagles to explain his need to stay in Sweden until more details emerged about the diagnosis. The club initially appeared supportive, but later issued an ultimatum requiring him to report by Thursday at 9 a.m. or face dismissal. Gabriella noted that the club had previously agreed to wait for test results expected on November 27. The call came the day after they received confirmation of the large tumor. Heinerö said the move left him shocked and without the support he anticipated. Discussions about a contract extension had taken place before the change in the club's position. Heinerö reported losing respect for the leadership, though he praised team leader Anders. He added that being registered in Denmark delayed access to Swedish benefits until March. Gabriella has since recovered with no detectable cancer, though she is not yet officially considered cancer-free.
