Ilari Kapanen leaves Timrå after limited SHL appearances

Timrå IK announced that young Finnish defenseman Ilari Kapanen will not continue with the club next season. The nearly 19-year-old prospect signed a one-year contract last summer but struggled to secure a roster spot. Timrå thanked him on social media for his contributions.

Timrå posted on social media: 'Tack för allt Ilari Kapanen! Då, nu och för alltid 🔴⚪ #timraik,' signaling the end of his time with the SHL team. Kapanen appeared in three SHL matches during the 2024/2025 season but did not earn a permanent place on the roster. Instead, he was loaned to HIFK in the fall, where an injury sidelined him and caused him to miss the junior world championships. He later returned to Timrå's junior team and completed the season, which ended in March. Kimmo Kapanen, Ilari's father and former Timrå sports director, now holds the same role at Finnish club Kärpät. His older brother, Oliver Kapanen, transitioned from Timrå in the SHL to his first full NHL season with Montreal. The family connections highlight a pattern of Kapenens moving on from Timrå to new opportunities. Expectations had been high for Ilari to develop into a reliable two-way defenseman in the SHL, but injuries and limited playtime altered that path.
